The solar system formed some 4.6 billion years ago when a large molecular cloud collapsed into a flat disk.  Most of the mass was where our sun is today while the other planets and dwarf planets form.

Today we have eight planets and a number of dwarf planets including Pluto, which was a planet until the dwarf planets were defined.   Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars are the rocky planets whereas Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune are considered the outer gas planets.   Here you will find photos of most of the planets, the moon, and the sun.  In addition, you will find eclipse photography with the moon and sun.
